Hold onto your wigs — Chappell Roan has revealed her inspiration for “The Subway.”

And it’s been a long time coming. Fans had been anxiously awaiting the debut of the mass transit-themed song after she debuted it at the Governor’s Ball last year. After “The Subway” was released on July 31, the song jumped to the top of the charts.

The song quickly became an hit for Roan, sitting at over 89 million streams on Spotify. And its music video has garnered over 10 million views in less than a month on YouTube.

Fans were quick to wonder who she wrote “The Subway” about — in the lyrics, the lesbian performer sang she “nearly had a breakdown” over a mistaken sighting of the song’s subject, who it can be inferred is a former lover. Roan talked a bit more about the inspiration in a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music.

“I actually wrote it about L.A., but the subway is just so much more romantic,” she explained. “It was actually about me hiding in Los Angeles from someone I was deeply in love with. But we weren’t on bad terms. It was us just trying to avoid each other in coffee shops and that we went to and like parties.”

Roan goes on to say that it came from not knowing “how to exist in this city” where her former flame seemed to be appearing at all of her favorite spots.

This new song might be the only new material fans get from the singer for awhile as the lesbian singer continues to do stops at festivals and shows across the world. In an interview with Vogue that was published on August 4, she said fans can expect her sophomore album to take a few years.

“It took me five years to write the first one, and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next,” she said during the interview. “I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.”

Though fans might not be getting a new project from Roan soon, the world did get a hint at new singles in the lyric video for her song, “The Giver.” The video featured a DVD menu with the song title and it had the names of what appeared to be other songs called “To Be Yours” and “Read & Make Out.”

Only time (and Roan) will tell! In the meantime, revisit “The Subway” with fresh eyes below.
