The ending of Amazon Prime Video’s Butterfly has left viewers stunned. David finds his wife Eunju murdered in the restaurant bathroom. With his daughter Rebecca missing, it appears she fled after killing Eunju. Given her past, it is only natural to think so.
However, a theory suggests that Rebecca might not have killed David’s wife.
Why didn’t Rebecca kill David’s wife in Butterfly?
Butterfly follows the story of David, a former spy who faked his death to protect his daughter, Rebecca. Things do not go according to plan, as she becomes a deadly agent for a group called Caddis. Unaware of this, David moved on, married Eunju, and had a daughter named Minhee. But when he finds out what Rebecca has become, he comes to save her.
Even with Caddis defeated and Rebecca once again part of David’s life, tragedy finds him again. While having dinner with his family in a restaurant, Rebecca and Eunju go to the bathroom together. When they do not return for a while, David goes in search of them. He finds his wife murdered in the bathroom and his daughter missing altogether. While it might have looked like Rebecca killed Eunju in retribution, that may not be the case.
Despite Rebecca’s past, her character arc in the show has been significant. If she did kill Eunju, the show would be disregarding her character arc. A theory on The Direct suggests there is a clue in the episode that could prove she did not kill her.
At around 42:28, Rebecca gives a suspicious look to a waitress before heading to the restroom. Since the waitress is the only staff member seen at the restaurant, the scene suggests she might have been sent to kill Eunju. Rebecca accompanied Eunju to protect her, but failed to do so.
Was the hitwoman sent by Juno? Did Rebecca run after the killer? Is that why she is not at the scene? Another possibility could be that Eunju’s father, who is also tied to a criminal gang, is behind the murder. These questions will most likely remain unanswered until the next season.
