‘I had a “way cool” evening watching 90s classic Clueless as a West End musical’

As if it’s been 30 years since Clueless premiered. Being the mega fan that I am of this iconic 90s film and of a good musical, I booked myself in to see Clueless the musical at the Trafalgar Theatre.

To make the experience even more memorable though, I booked a table at Colonel Saab – a fabulous Indian restaurant around the corner from the theatre- for a decadent dinner before enjoying the show. Colonel Saab has partnered with the musical to offer a ‘way cool’ Clueless themed menu to really get show-goers in the mood.

Before even taking a bite of any food, I was admiring the restaurant’s gorgeous interiors and low, warm lighting. I felt lovely and cosy as I perused their quirky, themed menu.

To start, I could not resist the ‘Baldwin’s Favourite’ Noor Mahal chicken tikka which came with a zesty lime dip. These were so juicy and tender, I was mega impressed.

They were on the spicier side but that’s how I prefer them to be so was very happy with my choice. For my main course, I had to opt for the ‘Paul Rudd never ages’ butter chicken. Again, the chicken was so moist and the sauce was creamy and filled with flavour without being overpowering. This was a dish of dreams.

I washed it all down with their signature cocktail made up of vodka, lime and raspberry flavours, which was absolutely divine. And for dessert I had the ‘Cher’s perfect match’ Chakka Varattiyathu Tart which was a tart and sweet treat made up of jackfruit and popping pearls. It was served with a refreshing scoop of mango sorbet which cut through the richness of the jackfruit amazingly.

When I couldn’t eat another bite, it was time for the musical portion of the evening. I’m often surprised by how many people who don’t know that Clueless is actually based on the Jane Austen novel ‘Emma’, but if she was a teenage girl from Beverly Hills in the 90s.

Clueless follows ditzy, spoiled 16-year-old Cher as she tries to make her way through life coasting on her charisma and match making skills. When a new girl turns up at school she decides to take on the charitable challenge of transforming her into a stunning, popular addition to her friend group and without spoiling it further, things don’t go as planned for ‘clueless’ Cher.

I was apprehensive to see this musical. I love the film – and the original book – so much that I wasn’t sure what music was going to add. But I was surprised in the best possible way.

This is a true, feel-good musical that has anyone and everyone leaving the theatre beaming. The music was written by KT Tunstall and it was catchy, funny and heartfelt all at once. I was humming away as I got on the Tube after the show and have been listening to the few tracks on Spotify on repeat ever since.

Emma Flynn’s performance as Cher was outstanding. It is so difficult to capture the essence of such an iconic character without simply doing an impression and Emma did just that.

She managed to work in mannerisms and expressions that were so Cher but still making it her own. I could go through every single member of the cast and shout about how good they were but it’s probably easier to say that every performer was brilliant.

I became properly immersed in the story which lent itself much better to being on stage than I expected. Anyone looking for a fun and joyful outing in London should look no further.
