Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was wary after noticing a pair of concertgoers at his Friday, August 22, concert wanted his help to get engaged following the now-viral Astronomer scandal.
During the concert held at London’s Wembley Stadium, a camera panned to a man holding up a sign that read, “I want to propose to her,” with an arrow pointing at his girlfriend.
“Now, listen, my brother,” Martin, 48, said, per social media footage. “I need you to nod ‘cause I need to do some very basic security checks, OK? Is this person your partner? Yes? [It’s] no one else’s partner?”
After the man affirmatively nodded, Martin further asked if the pair were “cousins or siblings” or even “made from AI.”

“Are you real people?” Martin continued, promoting more nods. “OK, then I think we can continue. Well, listen. My beautiful brother, here is some advice for free. As we all look on and see, I advise you to get down on one knee.”
The fan followed Martin’s words of advice, bending down on one knee and asking whether his girlfriend would marry him. She nodded “yes,” and he slipped a diamond ring on her finger.
“Well, congratulations, my brother and my sister,” Martin concluded in a singsong. “What a beautiful girl! What a wonderful guy, and on a day like this, I encourage you to kiss. I hope that you’re happy till the day that you die.”
Martin’s Coldplay concerts frequently incorporate a Jumbotron camera, allowing the band to get a glimpse at the faces in the crowd. The segment went viral in July after the lens panned to a couple who subsequently hid from view.

“Whoa, look at these two. Alright, come on. You’re OK,” Martin quipped at the time. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy. I’m not quite sure what to do.”
It was later confirmed that the two individuals were Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s Chief People Officer, Kristin Cabot. While neither Byron nor Cabot addressed the scandal or relationship status at the time, they were reportedly married to other people.

On the heels of the scandal, Astronomer launched an investigation into Byron and Cabot’s association that resulted in their respective resignations. Pete DeJoy, who cofounded Astronomer, is the new interim CEO.
