Fall brings a whole new season of live entertainment!  Here’s the round-up of family shows coming to venues all around the DC area over the next few months, plus any available ticket discounts. Happy viewing!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Where: National Theatre | Downtown DC

The Selfish Giant’s Garden

Bits ‘N Pieces Puppet Theatre’s The Selfish Giant’s Garden is based on Oscar Wilde’s famous fairy tale about a giant who learns it’s never too late to share. The production features lathe-turned wooden marionettes. The puppet’s simple wooden surface is left so children can use their imagination. The hair is made of rope, the eyes of shiny brads. The string puppet children are round and smooth while the Giant is boxy and rough. The musical show contrasts selfishness and sharing. How does a Selfish Giant learn to share? Recommended for ages 4+.

Tiny Tots
Where: The Puppet Co. | Glen Echo, MD
When: Most Saturdays & Sundays at 10am

The series presents puppet shows designed for the youngest theater patrons (ages 0-4). They are shorter, the lights stay on, and the doors stay open. They have an arsenal of shows that they switch up every performance, so be sure to check the schedule to see what’s playing when you go.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 in Concert

Merry Wives

William Shakespeare’s farce gets a joyful spin from Jocelyn Bioh (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding), dropping the debaucherous Falstaff into the melting pot of modern Harlem. Short on cash, Falstaff pursues the purses of two sharp-witted West African wives. As their proud husbands’ suspicions rise, the wives cook up a scheme to shame the would-be homewrecker and prove that “wives may be merry, and yet honest too” in this “spirited, sharp, and silly” (Variety) celebration. Taylor Reynolds (Fat Ham) makes her STC directorial debut in the play’s regional premiere. Recommended for teens and older.

The Very Hungry Caterpilla Show

This extra special event returns to Imagination Stage by popular demand… Experience 75 beautiful, larger-than-life puppets and original music as “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” “The Very Lonely Firefly,” “10 Little Rubber Ducks,” and, of course, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” come to life on stage. Recommended for ages 2-6.

Red Pitch

Bilal, Joey, and Omz have been boys their whole lives, growing up together playing soccer on their small pitch outside their south London apartments. But change is coming. Professional teams are signing up prospects, and they all harbor dreams to be chosen. Moreover, the neighborhood is changing, with lots of new apartments and franchise coffee shops pushing out longtime residents and local favorites. Can their friendship survive the threatened demise of their beloved “red pitch” and all it represents? Rated “PG-13.”

Troupe Vertigo: Cirque España!

The Princess Bride in Concert

Fencing, fighting, giants, monsters, true love, miracles… Experience this all-time favorite as never before, with the NSO performing composer Mark Knopfler’s unforgettable score live-to-picture! Directed by Rob Reiner, The Princess Bride features the all-star cast you know and love including Wallace Shwan, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Fred Savage, and Andre the Giant. The Best Haunted House Eve

Encore Stage & Studio presents its signature by kids for kids theatre in this new production… When students from two different high schools sneak into a local haunted house to scare their classmates, utter chaos ensues. At first it seems like the students are just pulling Halloween pranks, but when a spooky zombie and mysterious ghost don’t fit into the students’ haunting plans it can only mean one thing–they are not alone in the house! Freemont Ave

Written by Reggie D. White and directed by Lili-Anne Brown, Fremont Ave. is a raw, electric world premiere that moves across decades with the force of memory and the rhythm of Spades. From young love and big dreams to buried resentment and unmet expectations, three generations of Black men face off at the card table and come face-to-face with each other. At the center of it all is the family’s formidable matriarch: beloved, feared, and never forgotten. What begins as a game becomes a reckoning with masculinity, identity, and the weight of silence passed down. Fremont Ave. lays every card on the table and dares you to do the same. Disney on Ice: Jump In!

The Wild Duck

The eccentric son of a wealthy businessman wreaks havoc when he embarks on a crusade to unveil the false foundations of his friend’s life. Ignorant of the adults’ machinations, a young girl tries to shield a fragile creature from the hurts of the world. Recommended for teens and older.

Not Your Mother’s Goose

Super Cello

Fiddler on the Roof

Three performers charmingly bring the seasons to life with glowing fireflies, dancing butterflies, and more. Babies and toddlers will have the freedom to crawl, walk, and move within the space.

New Squid on the Block with Barefoot Puppets
Where: Discovery Theater | National Mall, DC

t can be hard to make friends. Especially if you have tentacles. Journey to Antarctica with a curious squid who seeks connection in the most unlikely of places. Penguins, orcas, and jellyfish abound in an icy landscape for this heartwarming tale of friendship. Beautifully handcrafted puppets, an original score by Ned Haskins, and a good dose of silliness combine to create a comedic, wordless performance that celebrates the ability to create connections, despite our differences.

Hadestown
Where: National Theatre | Downtown DC
When: November 18-23

Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone == as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go. REcommended for ages 8+.
