Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming revealed one of the “hardest decisions” she’s faced while caring for her husband during his ongoing dementia battle.
In 2023, the former Die Hard star received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), an incurable condition. The disease brings symptoms including personality shifts, speech problems, and obsessive or repetitive actions.
As Bruce’s health deteriorated over time, Emma was forced to make the tough choice of relocating the 70-year-old actor to his own residence for round-the-clock care. During a recent interview with ABC News, Emma revealed, “It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far.”
She elaborated, “But I knew first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters, you know, he wouldn’t want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”
Prior to this decision, Emma acknowledged that she had begun withdrawing her family from social situations after discovering that loud sounds worsened Bruce’s symptoms. She admitted to declining her daughters’ requests for friends to visit or stay overnight at their house, which she recognized was ultimately unfair to them.
Providing a comprehensive health assessment, Emma clarified, “Bruce is in really great health overall, you know. It’s just his brain that is failing him. The language is going, and, you know, we’ve learned to adapt. And we have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different, a different way.”
Emma noted that Bruce does recognize her and that when she walks into his room he still “lights up.”
She mentioned that he maintains the same bond with his five daughters, who consistently visit him. Bruce is a devoted father to five girls, including 13-year-old Mabel, 11-year-old Evelyn, 37-year-old Rumer Glenn, 34-year-old Scout LaRue, and 31-year-old Tallulah Belle.
