BRATTLEBORO — Sandglass Theater presents “Feral,” Sandglass’ newest ensemble project, August 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. at the New England Youth Theatre. This is the final show in Sandglass’ August Legacy Series.

Have you heard the joke about the she-wolf that is bitten by a werewolf and turns into a woman? No? Feral delivers the punchline to this darkly humorous and haunting tale of domestication, wildness, and the female experience.

Presented by Sandglass Theater, Feral invites audiences on a journey through a woman’s transformation — both literal and metaphorical — as she wrestles with the feral voice within. Through poetic imagery, live music, puppetry, and visceral performance, the piece explores the tension between intuitive knowledge and learned behavior. Inside the confines of a domelike dress, domestic rituals are disrupted by ancestral visitations and dreams of wolves, blurring the line between sanity and wildness.

This deeply evocative performance is part of a special hometown engagement where, for the first time, Sandglass Theater is presenting all of its currently touring original works to its local community. The program includes legacy pieces honoring founders Eric Bass and Ines Zeller Bass, alongside bold new works from the next generation of Sandglass artists. Feral is the inaugural Sandglass production entirely under the artistic leadership of Shoshana Bass, establishing the company’s creative vision, process, and realization of a work that represents the future of Sandglass Theater.

Each evening will conclude with a post-show community puppetry taster, offering audiences a rare behind-the-scenes look into Sandglass’ unique process of creating puppet theater.

“As a company that tours extensively, the legacy series is our gift to the home that shaped us,” says Shoshana Bass, Sandglass Artistic Director. “We are excited to share the living tradition of puppetry in Vermont with our local audience.”

Among the collaborators is Dr. Paulina Trejo Mendez, whose thesis on intuitive knowledge in indigenous women, and how this knowledge is obscured by established definitions, is one of the source materials for the project. As the project’s social dramaturg she helped interview 10 women globally whose testimonies became source material for devising, and whose voices remain part of the process. The Women’s Freedom Center supported Feral by connecting Sandglass with an advocate who served as one of our 10 interviewees. Feral was created by this brilliant devising ensemble of local and semi-local artists:

  • Maria Pugnetti (technical director, designer and musician), multimedia artist and technical designer
  • Gennarose Nethercott (writing collaborator), award-winning author and Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellow
  • Molly Steinmark (composer), vocalist and drummer specializing in soul, jazz, hip-hop, funk, reggae, and R&B
  • Sarah Nolen (director and performance ensemble), puppeteer and filmmaker
  • Dey Hernández (performance ensemble), bicultural organizer, dancer and puppeteer
  • Stoph Scheer (devising ensemble), puppeteer and clown
  • Eric Bass (outside eye), Sandglass founder

Visit www.sandglasstheater.org/legacy-series for tickets. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Join us August 29 and 30 in celebrating the spirit of the wild woman and the magic of live puppet theater.
