An LGBTQ+ beauty pageant will be one of the highlights of this year’s Fiestas Patrias in El Pitillal, part of a schedule of cultural and civic events honoring Mexico’s independence.

The pageant, scheduled for Sept. 12, is among dozens of activities planned from Aug. 31 to Sept. 17, including live music, traditional ceremonies and community festivities.

The celebrations open Aug. 31 with the presentation of the Fiestas Patrias Queen candidates, a casual attire runway show and musical performances. In the following days, events will include folkloric ballet shows, civic ceremonies and film screenings.

Sept. 13 will pay tribute to the “Niños Héroes,” six young cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle in 1847, with a civic ceremony, a film screening and the crowning of the Fiestas Patrias queen.

Entertainment continues Sept. 14 with DJ “Viva la Quebradita,” followed Sept. 15 by the traditional Torchlight March through El Pitillal, the Grito de Independencia — a reenactment of Mexico’s 1810 call to arms — and a concert by Banda Perla Negra.

Sept. 16 will feature a parade and a professional wrestling match. The festival concludes Sept. 17 with a 1990s-themed DJ night and a concert by Banda Los Plebes.

Arnulfo Esparza Muñoz, delegate of El Pitillal, said this year’s program reflects the borough’s commitment to culture and community.

“These festivities promise to be an unforgettable event, filled with music, dance and a celebration of Mexican culture and identity,” he said.

Esparza Muñoz also invited the public to attend El Pitillal’s patron saint celebrations honoring Saint Michael the Archangel, scheduled for Sept. 21-29.
