George Jones & Alan Jackson’s New ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ Opry Duet Will Give You Chills

The Grand Ole Opry announced at the end of July that in honor of its year-long 100th anniversary, it would be releasing a “truly historic” album full of famous “never-before-released live Opry performances of 20 iconic tracks” called Opry 100: Country’s Greatest Songs.

On Monday, August 25, the Grand Ole Opry has released the second single from the album, which drops in full on November 7, just three weeks before the official 100th anniversary of the Opry’s inaugural radio broadcast on November 28, 1925.

The second single of the album is a live version of “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” one of the all-time most iconic country music songs. This live recording is a “full circle mix” of original artist George Jones‘ performance on the Grand Ole Opry stage in 1993, with Alan Jackson singing the song on the Opry stage for Jones’ funeral when he died in 2013 at the age of 81.

Jones first joined the Opry in August 1956, and Jackson became an Opry member in June 1991.

On the Instagram post of the newly imagined recording, the Opry writes, “When George Jones passed away, his family chose the Opry House — the home of the music he loved — as the site for his funeral service. On May 2, 2013, during that service, fellow Opry member Alan Jackson performed Jones’ signature song, ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today,’ standing on the same circle of wood where Jones had sung it for Opry audiences many times, including on June 12, 1993.

“Using modern technology, we’ve combined both performances into a single track. Listen to the powerful, ‘full-circle’ blend featured on Opry 100: Country’s Greatest Songs.”

The debut single from Opry 100: Country’s Greatest Songs was Ashley McBryde’s live performance of the 1952 Hank Williams classic “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” You can pre-order the album here.

The full track list is as follows:
