Don’t ‘Trust’ this one for suspense – just unintentional humor

‘Trust’ (IMDb)

This is the time of year that studios throw out whatever is sitting around to see what sticks with movie audiences.

‘Trust’ (IMDb)

It’s the fall version of “January junk,” that limbo between summer blockbusters and serious award contenders. It’s the time of year films like “Trust” appear on the big screen.

On the surface, this looks entertaining. Sophie Turner (“Game of Thrones”) plays Lauren Lane, who became a star when she was just a child. Now that she has grown up on TV, she’s caught up in a scandal that’s rapidly unfolding in the press and social media after an internet hacker leaks her most private information.

To get away from it all and clear her head, she rents a remote cabin. With only her dog for company, she plans to spend some time in quiet contemplation.

That doesn’t happen.

There are hidden cameras in the Airbnb spot, though, and criminals quickly discover her presence. They decide to rob her, but she ends up escaping to a boiler room to stay safe. And she has a threat she hasn’t even imagined: Someone has hired an assassin to kill her.

At first, I believed the main character’s plight. Then coincidences and general silliness creates an unintentionally laughable tale that devolves with every scene to create a film that’s almost a parody of itself. I never believed the clumsy bad guys that are almost a comedy troupe, or the reason an assassin was dispatched, or a number of ridiculous escapes.

The finale is absolutely preposterous. To avoid spoilers I won’t tell you about it, but if I did, you’d be rolling your eyes in disbelief.

This is a throwback to a “made-for-tv” movie that isn’t serious enough to earn its place on the big screen.

Turner turns in a believable performance. If only the story line were.

1/2 star

Running time: 86 minutes.

Rated: R for foul language, violence, blood, and scenes of death.

In theaters.
