Today is Jack Black‘s birthday, and to celebrate this very special day, Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show are treating fans to one of the best ’90s cover songs, possibly ever.
It’s no secret that Black can sing, and Fallon has great pipes, too. But their collaboration on Extreme’s “More Than Words” is one that stood the test of time. After all, they made the music video spoof a decade ago, and even now, it’s just as fun to listen to and watch.
Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon Spoofed Extreme’s ‘More Than Words’
In Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon’s version of “More Than Words,” which was shared on The Tonight Show in May 2015, the pair was filmed in black and white just like the original music video.
Black played lead vocalist Gary Cherone, and he even wore a slicked-back half ponytail wig, just like the hairstyle Cherone wore for the iconic music video. Fallon sat beside him, also wearing a wig and playing guitar as Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.
Fan reactions are exactly what we’d expect with one writing, “I love how they do this as like a joke, it’s actually really good! Goofy, yes, but they sound great!”
Another chimed in, “Jimmy and Jack Black nailed it, bringing back all the feels from the 90s! More than words, this duet is pure gold.”
A third said, “This is EPIC! Gen X approved!”
Someone else was all in their early ’90s feelings when they wrote, “Now they need to do ‘To Be With You’ by Mr Big.”
“Jack black is a legend ❤️,” another exclaimed.
“I love the way Jack Black puts that extra razzle-dazzle to it 🤭💙,” someone else shared. It’s safe to say that more collaborations from Black and Fallon would be more than welcome.
Here’s the original music video for the Extreme song that had everyone singing in the early ’90s.
Here’s What Happened To Extreme After Rising To Fame In The ’80s And ’90s
Extreme hit the peak of stardom in the early ’90s when their biggest hit, “More Than Words,” was number one on the Billboard charts in 1991. They disbanded in 1996, with guitarist Nuno Bettencourt going solo and lead singer Gary Cherone joining Van Halen after Sammy Hagar‘s departure.
Ultimately, Cherone and Bettencourt reunited, and Extreme reunited in 2004 and 2006 before heading out on tour in 2007, although not all members of the band were original. Their most recent album, Saudades de Rock, was released in 2008.
