Dixon’s Violin, known for his unique approach to the instrument, is set to perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater.
The performance is part of his HUMANKINDness tour, according to a community announcement. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Dixon, a former technology leader and symphony violinist, left his career to pursue music full-time. He improvises on a five-string electric violin using a looping system he developed, creating a one-man symphony.
A journey of transformation
Dixon grew up in Davison, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint, where he was the assistant concertmaster of the university’s symphony. He also served as the assistant concertmaster of the Flint Youth Symphony, one of only two youth orchestras in the U.S. invited to perform in Munich, Germany.
His musical journey took a turn in 2005 after attending the Burning Man festival, where he was inspired to improvise and create his own music.
“When I saw the look in people’s eyes, that I could move them with my own music, it changed my life,” Dixon said in the announcement. “I made up my mind then and there to rearrange my life priorities. I had been playing for 25 years, but for the first time I truly fell in love with music.”
A unique musical experience
Dixon’s performances are characterized by his ability to improvise and his command of a wide range of pedal effects. He is known for his empathy and presence, often guiding and inspiring listeners through his music and words.
“Humankindness is the blending of humankind and kindness,” Dixon said in the announcement. “I believe we are all connected and we can honor each other with compassion and care.”
His performances are described as a blend of rhythmic and melodic violin repetitions, percussive noises, power chords and speed runs.
