What is Elvis Presley’s best song? The King’s top tune has been crowned by our readers
After five weeks, it’s clear that fans still “Can’t Help Falling In Love” with one of Elvis’ most romantic numbers.
The finals pitted a made-in-Memphis Elvis classic from 1969, “Suspicious Minds,” up against one of his most beloved film songs, 1961’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”
“Can’t Help Falling In Love” emerged victorious in convincing fashion with 59% of the vote against 41% for “Suspicious Minds.”
In fact, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” easily cruised (or crooned) to victory in all rounds of the bracket, besting “Jailhouse Rock,” “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” and “A Big Hunk o’ Love” on its path to the finals.

The history of ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’
Written by Hugo Peretti, Lugig Creatore and George David Weiss — and with a melody based on a song by Bavarian-born composer Jean-Paul Egide Martini from the 1700s — Elvis recorded the song (doing 29 takes!) as part of the soundtrack for the 1961 film, “Blue Hawaii.”
“Can’t Help Falling In Love” would peak a No. 2 on the U.S. pop charts, while reaching the No. 1 spot in the U.K.

The song would become a staple of Elvis’ live performances when he return to the stage in the late ‘60s. It was famously done as part of the ‘68 Comeback Special, the Aloha from Hawaii satellite concert, and was the final song Elvis performed live during his final concert in Indianapolis in 1977 less than two months before his passing.
It has remained one of Elvis’ most haunting love songs and apparently still has a hold over fans and readers of The Commercial Appeal who voted overwhelmingly in its favor.
How Elvis Presley’s best song was determined
As part of the recent Elvis Week festivities, The Commercial Appeal decided to turn to you, our readers/Elvis fans, to determine the top track by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Adopting a March Madness-style competition to determine Elvis’ best track, we started with 32 songs facing off in randomly generated matchups. The first several rounds saw some close battles, while the quarterfinals generated rather more lopsided wins. The semifinals continued that trend with a couple runaway winners, with “Can’t Help Falling In Love” ultimately winning decisively in the finals.
Thanks to all who voted and participated throughout the bracket.
