Bruce Springsteen quickly recognized the challenges Jeremy Allen White faced while filming the biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. After White struggled to record one of The Boss’s iconic 1984 hits, Springsteen couldn’t help but react with amusement, offering a priceless glimpse into the rocker’s sense of humor.

In a new interview with The Los Angeles Times, White opened up about the challenges of bringing key moments of Springsteen’s life to the screen. Despite working closely with a vocal coach to capture the singer’s voice, he admitted that certain recordings were particularly tough to master.

The actor explained, “I spent an afternoon singing ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ and I got a migraine and I lost my voice. I saw Bruce afterward, and he asked, ‘What’d you do today?'”

“And I said, ‘Uh, I recorded ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ And he smiles and says, ‘Sounds about right.'”

White admitted that in focusing on replicating Springsteen’s vocals, he sometimes lost sight of the personal touches of his songs. He told the Times he realized he also needed to capture the essence of Springsteen’s iconic storytelling.

White explained, “I was so focused on just sounding like Bruce, and my coach, Eric [Vetro], asks, ‘What are you singing about? What’s the story? Where’s Bruce coming from? Is he singing from his perspective? Is it about his childhood? Is he playing a character?’”

The Bear star admitted that he should have asked those questions first. However, he was “so anxious about sounding like [Bruce], I found myself blocked by the real thing, which was: ‘How can I just sing the song as honestly as possible?'”

Springsteen discussed the film with Rolling Stone. He revealed he tried to remain a resource for the actors during filming while, at the same time, taking a step back.

He said, “If there was a scene coming up that was sometimes really deeply personal, I wanted the actors to feel completely free. I didn’t want to get in the way, and so I would just stay at home.”

He added that being on the set was “much worse for the actors than me.” He added that White was “very, very tolerant of me the days that I would appear on set.”

The film’s official press site explains the film’s premise. “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 Nebraska album when he was a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggling to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past.”

PEOPLE Magazine reported the film made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival on August 29. It will premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 28, 2025. The outlet reports that early reactions to the film have been favorable.

Deliver Me From Nowhere, based on the Warren Zanes book of the same name, will be released in theaters on October 24, 2025.
