Simu Liu recently spoke about his experience filming Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview, he shared what it was like working with Marvel veterans. He also explained why Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Doctor Doom will leave audiences “blown away.”
Fans will be ‘blown away’ by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom portrayal
In an interview originally published in Japanese outlet The River, and translated into English, Liu described his experience working with Marvel veterans as “a dream” and admitted he felt both excitement and anxiety on set.
He said that collaborating with actors he had admired since childhood was surreal, adding, “Every day feels like a dream. I get to go to work and work with people I respect and admire.”
The actor emphasized his admiration for Downey Jr., who makes his Marvel comeback as Doctor Doom after years of defining the franchise as Iron Man. He praised Downey Jr.’s kindness and generosity toward colleagues and said the veteran actor remained approachable and inspiring despite his long career. Liu stated, “[Robert Downey Jr.] really inspires me. He’s been an integral part of Marvel’s success and has been in so many films over the years, yet he still takes the time to meet and connect with so many people.”
Liu also predicted that fans would be “blown away” by what Downey Jr. brings to the table in Avengers: Doomsday. He said, “Because he’s played such a diverse range of roles, I think everyone will be blown away by the way he tackles this new character (Doctor Doom) in this film.” His comments suggest that Shang-Chi and Doom will likely share scenes in the upcoming crossover.
Anthony and Joe Russo direct Avengers: Doomsday. The film unites a wide ensemble of Marvel heroes and villains, including returning X-Men characters. Marvel will release it on December 18, 2026. Liu will also appear in his latest film Last Breath, which opens in Japan on September 26, 2025.
