Oscar-nominated star of ‘Dances with Wolves’ dies at 73

Graham Greene, the Oscar-nominated actor who co-starred alongside acting greats including Al Pacino, Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson, has died. He was 73.

Greene died Monday, Sept. 1 in a Toronto hospital after a long illness, Deadline reported.

“He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed,” Greene’s agent Michael Greene (no relation) wrote in a statement to Deadline.

“You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” he added, referencing the actor’s longtime agent, who died in 2013.

Born in 1952 on a Canadian reserve, Greene began performing on stage in the 1970s and made various films in the 1980s, including “Revolution.”

He was nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Kicking Bird in “Dances With Wolves,” the eventual best picture winner. He lost out on the Oscar to Joe Pesci for “Goodfellas.”

He went on to appear in other high-profile roles in “Maverick,” “Die Hard With a Vengeance,” “The Green Mile,” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” In later years, he appeared in “Wind River,” by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, and in his series “1883″ and “Tulsa King.”

Greene was also a series regular “Wolf Lake,” “Defiance” and Marvel’s “Echo” in addition to recurring stints on “Northern Exposure,” “Lonesome Dove: The Series,” “Being Erica,” “Longmire,” “Goliath” and “American Gods.”

Greene also won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album For Children in 2000. His other accolades include a Gemini Award, Canadian Screen Award, and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Earlier this year, he received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in Canada.

Greene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore, daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene and grandson Tarlo, according to Deadline.
