In the thick of Bengal’s heated political season, actor-director Anirban Bhattacharya has taken his dissent beyond stage and screen, setting it to music with his newly formed band, Hooliganism. The group’s latest song, Tumi Mosti Korbe Jani (I know you will have fun), has electrified audiences on social media with its bold mix of rock rhythms and biting political satire.

Known for his acclaimed performances in Bengali theatre, cinema, and even Hindi films-where he starred opposite Rani Mukherjee-Anirban has now added music to his repertoire as a tool of protest.

With his bandmates Subhadeep Guha, Debraj Bhattacharya, Krishanu Ghosh, Sushruta Goswami, Nilansuk Datta, Pritam Das, Pritam Deb Sarkar, and Someswar Bhattacharya, he has crafted a song that is less entertainment and more cultural commentary.

The track opens with Anirban unrolling a long paper and declaring “kagoj amra dekhaboi” (We will show our papers), a direct jab at the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter verification drive, recently in the spotlight in Bihar and beyond.

From there, the lyrics spiral into unrelenting satire-mocking authoritarian posturing, failed governance, and political hypocrisy-served with a punchy rhythm and a rebellious edge.

The band spares no one in Bengal’s political spectrum. Taking aim at TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, the song recalls his controversial remarks during protests over the horrific rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. With stinging irony, the lines say: “Bhai, etai amader doshrege jabe Kunal Ghosh” (Brother, this is our fault Kunal Ghosh will be offended if we sing and protest).

From there, the satire shifts to BJP’s Dilip Ghosh, lampooning his infamous claim that desi cow milk contains traces of gold. The song quips: “Goyna dokan shob beche dao, gorur doodh e shona” (Sell all your jewellery shops, as cow milk contains gold).

But perhaps the most piercing strike is reserved for CPM leader Shatarup Ghosh, a prominent face of the party. The band highlights his controversial purchase of a Rs 22-lakh SUV despite declaring assets of just Rs 2 lakh in his 2021 affidavit, singing: “Oi biplobi der party r, arek Ghosh o acheTai kineche gari. Daam ta beshi khub” (There is another Ghosh of the revolutionary partyhe has bought a very expensive car).

The barb lands sharply, especially in the run-up to the Bengal elections where questions of integrity dominate discourse.

Beyond individual leaders, Hooliganism’s lyrics take on the larger fabric of politics-leaders switching parties ahead of polls, performative nationalism, and societal absurdities such as pet registration drives and court rulings on stray dogs. At one point, they even pose the provocative question: “Masjid er niche ki ache?” (What lies beneath the mosque?), skewering communal narratives with irony.

On social media, the song has set off a firestorm. Some fans hailed it as a thunderbolt aimed at Bengal’s political class, praising Anirban and his team for “eating and leaving no crumbs”.

Others argued it was a safe rebellion that left out issues such as rising crimes against women and the teacher recruitment scam.

In a surprising twist, even TMC’s Kunal Ghosh, one of the song’s satirical targets, praised the band. Sharing a clip of the performance, he wrote: “I enjoyed the style of the song and its presentationA bit sarcastic? So what! Kunal Ghosh knows how to enjoy such fun.”
