The Apartments Announce First New Album In Five Years, ‘That’s What The Music Is For’

Influential Brisbane outfit The Apartments have announced the release of their first new album in five years, That’s What The Music Is For.

Led by Peter Milton Walsh, the revered outfit will share their new record on October 17th, with the forthcoming release also teased by the release of new single A Handful Of Tomorrow.

Recorded with producer Tim Kevin in Sydney between shows across Europe, the US, and South America, the record features contributions from Australian and French musicians, with the eight-track record arriving as an interconnected piece of work.

“Since I didn’t go into the studio with an album ready set of songs, but instead took pieces in to record as soon as they were written and worked on the music in the studio whenever it was available, it wasn’t clear that I’d get to that rainbow’s end – a world of songs that feel like they belong together: an album,” Walsh explains.

“Yet, over the course of recording and as the songs gathered with one another, they began to reveal a story about time – of how past and present so often trade places and that in music and in memory, the people who have gone keep moving in and out of our lives—where can they live now, except in song?

“We will be saying goodbye to them in bits and pieces for the rest of our lives.”

First formed in 1978, Walsh complemented the group’s original one-year tenure with a role as guitarist for The Go-Betweens. Reactivating the band in the mid-’80s alongside work with acts like The Laughing Clowns, Walsh has led The Apartments’ sporadic existence ever since, working with myriad talented artists across a number of critically-acclaimed albums including the most recent release, 2020’s In And Out Of The Light.

The Apartments will hit the road in October and November for a run of shows across Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, with a run of European dates scheduled across March 2026. Tickets to these shows are on sale now.
