We are in the final month of the season, and the Royals are desperately clinging to playoff hopes. As I write this, they stand 2.5 games back of a playoff spot with 24 left to play. They’re far from out of it, but as the Mariners and Red Sox have struggled, the Royals have failed to take advantage of the openings that have been left to them.
That begs the question: do the Royals need to make the playoffs this year in order to consider it a successful season? For some people, just finishing over the season .500, something the 21st-century Royals have done vanishingly rarely. For others, only a World Series victory could be considered sufficient. There are many in every area in between. There are even some who might consider this year a success solely for having discovered a rising star in Maikel Garcia.
None of us knows how the season will end for the Royals. There are likelihoods and probabilities, but no certainties. What we can be certain about is how we’ll feel about certain milestones that the Royals might achieve. And that is the subject of today’s poll question.
