While Jeffrey Wright’s turn as Commissioner Jim Gordon in Matt Reeves’ The Batman may have garnered immense praise upon the film’s release, the consensus at the time of his casting was way different, at the very least. In the build-up to The Batman 2, the actor has opened up about the backlash he faced when he stepped into the shoes of the GCPD veteran, while also highlighting the absurdity and outdatedness of the criticism levied upon him.

Jeffrey Wright says backlash on his casting in The Batman was ‘stupid’

During a recent interview, the Westworld alum noted that even though he is enthusiastic about playing Jim Gordon once again in The Batman 2, he is well aware of the skepticism around his casting.

“I really find it fascinating the ways in which there’s such a conversation, and I think even more of a conversation now, about Black characters in these roles,” Jeffrey Wright told Collider.

The Primetime Emmy Award winner added, “It’s just so f—–g racist and stupid. It’s just so blind in a way that I find revealing to not recognize that the evolution of these films reflects the evolution of society, that somehow it’s defiling this franchise not to keep it grounded in the cultural reality of 1939 when the comic books were first published.” He then described the outcry against his recruitment in The Batman by saying, “It’s just the dumbest thing. It’s absent all logic.”

Jeffrey Wright is all set to reprise his role of Commissioner Gordon in the much-awaited The Batman Part 2, which is on track to begin production in early 2026. The 59-year-old actor recently shared an update on Instagram about the sequel, suggesting that he has finally received the script for the project in his social media post.

Also featuring the likes of Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, and Andy Serkis, the movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
