Even though John Oates and Daryl Hall recently resolved their previous legal conflict, it seems the pair have no plans to make music together again anytime soon…or even talk to each other.
During a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show, Oates (who played guitar and sang alongside lead vocalist Hall in Hall & Oates) opened up about why he and his former bandmate decided to part ways following Hall’s 2023 lawsuit against Oates (who tried to sell his stake in their joint publishing company, Whole Oats Enterprises). The conflict was reportedly settled in August.
“Daryl and I have amicably agreed to separate our business interests, that’s the bottom line. We’re both pursuing whatever it is that we want to pursue,” Oates said.
“We were partners for over 50 years and the partnership was predicated on a lot of things and we were kids (when) we entered into a business relationship that was quite frankly out of date,” he continued. “Because when you enter a business agreement that’s 50 years old, and all of a sudden you’re 70, you’re not the same person and the business is not the same.”
“I wanted to make sure that I could at least see through my creative life in a way that was completely unencumbered and complete 100 per cent authentic to who I am right now,” Oates added, going on to say that the “ship has sailed” on a reunion and wants fans to “remember Hall & Oates in its prime.”
“As time went on, as we both got older and our life experiences changed, our relationships changed, then we started to not have the same goals anymore. That’s really what happened,” Oates explained.
What did Daryl Hall say about his falling out with John Oates?
In an interview with The Times this March, several months before their legal conflict was resolved, Hall called Oates’ attempt to sell his shares in their publishing company “the ultimate partnership betrayal.”
Commenting on the possibility of a reunion, Hall seemed to feel the same as his former partner, saying, “That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean.”
“I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I’m kind of used to it,” he continued.
