I’m retiring after 42 years. The words stick in my throat.
I started my photojournalism career at the Pacific Daily News in Guam after graduating from Arizona State University and spending a year on Oahu. After two years in Guam, I moved to the Pensacola News Journal in Florida. I guess I was tired of year-round sunshine because I moved to Cincinnati in 1989. But I’ve never regretted the move and I’ve learned to drive in snow!
I spent more than half of the past 36 years at The Enquirer as a photo editor, but the best decision I ever made was to go back to the street, shooting full time. No more endless meetings, just doing what I’ve loved since I was a little girl fascinated by my dad’s cameras.
My career has taken me around the world, from The Falkland Islands, to Singapore, New Delhi, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. I’m especially proud that I was able to show the human toll, too, of the opioid epidemic. Being part of the team to win a Pulitzer Prize for Seven Days of Heroin in 2018 is something I never imagined.
Beyond crime, social issues and weather, my happy place has always been the zoo. And Cincinnati has a great one. Thank you for letting me turn my hobby into a career. I’m forever grateful.
