A “gripping” and “complex” Irish crime thriller lands new UK streaming home

A recent and acclaimed Irish crime thriller has found a new UK streaming home.

Amongst the Wolves stars The Wire’s Aidan Gillen, newcomer Daniel Fee and the film’s co-writer Luke McQuillan. It focuses on an army veteran struggling with PTSD and sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin.

He soon meets a teenage boy who is also homeless, and sees this as his second chance. However, the two soon cross paths with a dangerous drug gang and its unhinged leader (played by Gillen).

The film has been directed by Mark O’Connor, who previously helmed Cardboard Gangsters and King of the Travellers.

Amongst the Wolves has been available on digital platforms to purchase and rent for a few months, but now it is also available to stream with a Cinema subscription for either Sky or NOW.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 16 reviews with a very respectable 88% positive score.

A common theme among the critical write-ups is that this is a film of two halves: a drama about trying to get by while sleeping rough, and a thriller about trying to escape the clutches of a dangerous gangster.

As Everything’s Interesting wrote, “Amongst the Wolves tries to do both, and it isn’t always successful at balancing the two sides of the coin”, but adds that McQuillan is “able to hold the two sides of the film together through sheer force of will”.

“Amongst the Wolves is a gripping thriller but needed to pick a story and push harder”, wrote Film Focus, while The Irish Times said: “The ending is sufficiently convincing that it proves easy enough to forgive earlier clunks and creaks.”

The Irish Independent added that the film is “a grimy, complex thriller” with “underdeveloped subplots”, but gets by on its “big heart”.

Amongst the Wolves is now available to stream via Sky/NOW with the relevant Cinema subscription.
