The R&B world was stunned earlier this year when Grammy-nominated singer Angie Stone was killed in an early morning car crash.

She was just 63.

And just months after that tragedy, her family is now suing a trucking company, a truck manufacturer “and others” for damages following the interstate crash in Alabama, according to The Associated Press.

The family says the driver of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter that Stone was in lost control and then flipped when he tried to steer back onto the highway. According to the lawsuit, Stone and the occupants of the van survived the wreck and were attempting to get out when an 18-wheeler hit them.

The Associated Press said the lawsuit claims that the impact of the 18-wheeler ejected Stone from the van and that she ended up pinned under the vehicle where she died.

Sheila Hopkins was also in the van, according to the report.

Her son, Michael D’Angelo Archer and Stone’s daughter, Diamond Stone, filed the lawsuit, according to the outlet, and they are suing the van drier, the truck driver, as well as the man and companies that owned the van, the trucking company and the maker of the 18-wheeler.

They claim that the truck’s collision avoidance system failed to detect the van lying in the roadway. The AP said the lawsuit also claims the truck driver was listening to music on headphones, was not paying attention, and never braked before the crash.

Stone was traveling to the CIAA men’s basketball title game where she was set to perform during halftime.

The Associated Press saidthat Stone “found a sweet spot in the early 2000s” alongside the likes of Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Maxwell and D’Angelo during the rise of neo-soul.

Stone’s 2001 album, “Mahagony Soul,” hit No. 22 on the Billboard 200, and her 2007 album, “The Art Of Love & War” rose to No. 11 on the charts.

Her first real rise toward fame, though, came in the 1970s as part of the hip-hop trio The Sequence. She joined the R&B trio Vertical Hold in the 1990s. She released her first solo record, “Black Diamond,” in 1999 which had the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).”

Stone was nominated three times for Grammy Awards and won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. She was given the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors in 2021.
