Jodie Foster is passing her True Detective torch to a fellow Oscar winner.
And now, the renowned actress, 62, is sharing some words of wisdom for Nicolas Cage, who will star in the upcoming season of HBO’s beloved series.
Foster — who won a Primetime Emmy for her role in the fourth installment — has been in Toronto to promote her new film A Private Life, where she took time to share some advice for Cage, 61, as he prepares to tackle the upcoming lead role. Both seasons are helmed by showrunner Issa López.
“First and foremost, go have dinner with Issa López and grill her for everything,” Foster told Variety in an interview published Sunday, September 7. “She’s such an amazing collaborator and a wonderful director. I think they’re going to get along famously. My advice is to embrace the feeling of True Detective, but allow it to be your own.”
Deadline announced on August 21 that Cage was in talks to star in season 5 of True Detective, which first started airing on HBO back in 2014. Deadline also noted that the fifth installment will be set in the Jamaica Bay section of New York City, with Cage being eyed for the role of New York police detective Henry Logan.
In season 1, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey starred as a pair of Louisiana homicide detectives investigating a series of brutal murders with ties to the occult.
Following her award-winning turn in season 4, Foster is now making waves with her new movie A Private Life — as it marks her first French-language leading role.
“I had made a few films in French, but I’d never had so much dialogue,” Foster told Variety. “That was probably the first draw to making the project after reading the script and, of course, meeting Rebecca. I’ve always wanted to make a real French movie that wasn’t a bloated American co-production, but one that felt authentically French, with a French team and about the French experience. This was my opportunity.”
