James Gunn’s Superman continues to receive great news as the first DC Universe movie nears the end of its theatrical run.

Much has been written, both by critics and the DC fandom, about how Gunn’s Superman is unlikely to surpass Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel at the global box office. At the time of writing, Superman has earned $614 million worldwide, which is just shy of the $670 million total for Man of Steel. However, while Snyder’s 2013 superhero blockbuster will continue to hold the record for the highest-grossing Superman movie ever, Gunn’s Superman is looking to emerge victorious with a far more significant achievement: a larger net profit.

What profit did Superman make for Warner Bros.?

According to Variety, Superman is expected to generate around $125 million in theatrical profits, more than double the $42.7 million profit that Man of Steel reportedly earned for Warner Bros. in 2013 (via Deadline). With additional revenue streams still to come for Superman, such as home video and streaming rights, the DCU is truly off to a strong start, making the recent sequel announcement to Superman less of a surprise.

Gunn has already completed a first pass at his second installment in the Superman Saga, Man of Tomorrow, which will reunite David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. So far, no other actors have been officially confirmed for the DCU sequel, although several have teased their involvement in the project, including Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Aaron Pierre (John Stewart), and Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.).

Production on Man of Tomorrow is expected to begin in 2026. With a July 2027 release date already in place, the movie is currently set to be the fourth theatrical installment in the DCU, coming after Superman, Supergirl, and Clayface.

Superman is currently available to watch in theaters and on digital platforms. The DCU movie will arrive on home video on September 23, 2025.
