Taylor Swift’s MTV VMAs absence led to some intense speculation but it turns out the singer had a simple reason for staying home.
E! News reported that Swift skipped the VMAs because she’s focused on preparing for the release of her new The Life of a Showgirl album on Oct. 3. The singer was nominated for Artist of the Year alongside Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen and The Weeknd. The award ended up going to Lady Gaga.

Ahead of the show, fans speculated about why Swift might be opting to skip the award show with many citing last year’s “Taylor Cam” and the brutal speculation that might come with it.
At the 2024 show, which Swift did attend, MTV had a dedicated livestream camera pointed at Swift’s seat for most of the show and streamed it directly on YouTube. Swift spent most of the night backstage, with fans speculating that she was deliberately avoiding her seat because of the camera.
Swifties largely agreed that the livestream was a total invasion of privacy and while we don’t know if MTV planned on bringing back “Taylor’s Cam” this year, the singer likely avoided being a subject of scrutiny by opting to skip the show.
As fans know, Swift is vulnerable to all kind of speculation and “Taylor’s Cam” would have only fueled it further whether it’s pregnancy rumors or lip readings of her private conversations.
Overall, Swift might have skipped the show because it was a quiet night for her on the nominations front. Given that she was only nominated in one category, she had less of a reason to be present than in 2024 where she took home seven trophies. Her single “Fortnight,” which features Post Malone, won Video of the Year, Song of the Summer, Best Collaboration, Best Editing and Best Direction.
