Michael Chaves, the director of The Conjuring: Last Rites, joked about the prospect of the continuation of the franchise with comedian and actor Matt Rife and Annabelle. This is despite the fact that Last Rites is slated to be the final movie in the Conjuring franchise, which currently has nine entries: four Conjuring movies, three Annabelle features, and two The Nun movies.

Chaves humorously proposed the idea of the next chapter of The Conjuring franchise featuring comedian and actor Matt Rife. This came after Rife announced on social media that he had bought Ed and Lorraine Warren’s home and occult museum. Patrick Wilson portrays Ed in these movies, while Vera Farmiga essays the role of Lorraine.
“It does though feel like a great new chapter. If there ever was a Phase 2 of the [Conjuring] series, I think that it should begin with him [Rife] just turning these viral bits with each one of the artifacts and it just goes horribly wrong,” Chaves told Entertainment Weekly.
The filmmaker also clarified that he has “no idea” why Rife made such a decision. He also laughed while expressing his concerns for the comic. “I’m deeply concerned…deeply concerned,” Chaves said. “I dunno. As long as he’s got the instruction manual or whatever the blessing procedure is, I’m sure it will all be fine. I guess I am curious. I haven’t read enough about it to know why he did it.”
Back in August, Rife announced on Instagram that he had acquired the Warrens’ home and Occult Museum. He added in the post that as part of the purchase, he was “the legal guardian for at least the next 5 years, of the entire haunted collection including the Annabelle doll, with my good friend @eltoncastee [Elton Castee]!!”
He proceeded to speak about his interest in “the paranormal and all things haunted” and expressed his love for the Conjuring movies. Rife also teased plans to open the property for overnight stays and museum tours.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is currently playing in theaters.
