Charley Pride left behind an incredible legacy — consisting of numerous No. 1 hits and millions of record sales — after his death.
Now, the country music legend’s legacy will be further solidified when an album that has sat on the shelf for roughly 40 years will be posthumously released later this month.
Pride’s forthcoming album “Endlessly: A Tribute to Brook Benton” will drop on what would have been Benton’s 94th birthday on Friday, Sept. 19. The album, which features “a delightful set of R&B productions,” was originally recorded in Dallas, Texas in the mid-1980s while Pride was in-between recording deals, an online press release states.
The recordings were rediscovered at Pride’s CECCA Productions office in Dallas and mixed and mastered by late audio engineer/producer Bob Pickering after Pride’s death from complications related to COVID-19 in 2020.
“Other than digitally transferring, mixing and mastering the original performances, virtually no other post-production has been applied — no instrumentation has been added and no trendy artificial intelligence has been used to modify or enhance the vocals or recordings in any way,” the press release states.
“Endlessly: A Tribute to Brook Benton” features a roster of accomplished musicians such as legendary bassist Chuck Rainey, drummer/percussionist Gene Glover, jazz pianist Fred Crane, guitarist Jerry Matheny and Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame inductee Billy Briggs Jr. (Bob Wills).
“Of course, nothing conveys ‘vintage recording’ better than timeless orchestral strings. So, Pickering also charted some lush string arrangements for the project which were tracked by a first-rate ensemble of strings led by the late violinist, conductor and music educator Anshel Brusilow,” the press release continued.

It’s Just a Matter of Time
An athlete-turned-musician, Pride has been regarded as country’s first Black super star. He saw the most success from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s, racking up 36 number one country singles and 12 gold albums, according to AllMusic.
In addition to his impressive record sales, Pride is a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, three-time Grammy winner and former Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year.
