A new Amityville movie just got announced — a proper one from a real studio, not one of these “anyone can use the title ‘Amityville’ flicks” that grifters posing as filmmakers seem to churn out every month — and it got me thinking about the best Amityville movie. Shockingly, I don’t consider the original 1979 The Amityville Horror to be the greatest in the series. In fact, the best Amityville movie didn’t even make it to theaters in the United States.

No, the best of the true Amityville entries is the direct-to-video Amityville 1992: It’s About Time, a movie about an evil clock.

I’m dead serious.

The Awesomeness Of Amityville 1992: It’s About Time

Amityville 1992: It’s About Time is the sixth official sequel to The Amityville Horror and the second to be adapted from the fictional novel Amityville: The Evil Escapes, a story where various items from the Amityville house made their way out into the world. As stated before, the evil item in this story is a wicked clock that traces back to an ancient necromancer who would sacrifice children for his dark magicks.

This is already one of the big reasons I love Amityville 1992: It’s About Time. We are so far gone from whatever the original hoax… er, haunting was about that the filmmakers can go for broke with the wackiest horror concepts they want. Thankfully, this sequel was handled by none other than director Tony Randel, the man behind the way-better-than-anticipated Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the true cult classic gross-out, Ticks. Randel infuses the movie with so much manic energy that you will never be bored. By the end, the walls of the house are being torn open to reveal the evil clock has spread its infernal gearwork into the home.

I wouldn’t want to reveal all the insane pleasures of Amityville 1992: It’s About Time, so here’s where I link to the movie on Prime Video and tell you to pull the trigger on the movie before I get into why it’s the best Amityville movie.

Amityville 1992: It’s About TIme Is The Best Amityville Movie

If we’re being honest, the Amityville series is one of the weakest in all of horror. Again, I’m not even including any of those crummy independent movies but they certainly haven’t helped the franchise’s reputation. Like I said, I don’t actually think the original Amityville Horror is all that great. I actually prefer the sleazier sequel, Amityville II: The Possession. As for any of the movies after that? There is some base fun to get out of Amityville: The Evil Escapes, the first of the “haunted items” adaptations, but it’s pretty barren otherwise.

To be fair, Amityville 1992: It’s About Time is the best Amityville movie by virtue of not having a lot of strong competition. I’m not saying that Tony Randel made some secret horror masterpiece that has been ignored by the masses, but it’s by far the most entertaining, propulsive, and downright fun movie in the proper series. Plus, you don’t have to watch a single other Amityville movie to enjoy it. You can jump right in and get shot in the face with all this movie’s demented delights.
