Michael Caine is coming out of retirement at age 92 for a new movie, according to multiple reports.
The legendary actor will have a role in a sequel to “The Last Witch Hunter,” Variety and Deadline have confirmed.
Though a deal for Caine hasn’t been finalized, he is expected to reprise his character, Dolan, opposite Vin Diesel as an immortal witch hunter named Kaulder.
“The Last Witch Hunter,” released in 2015, grossed $130 million at the global box office. Deadline reports the sci-fi/fantasy adventure remained popular on ancillary markets and streaming, becoming one of the top five most viewed movies on Netflix this year.
Caine played a priest who assists Diesel’s warrior character as he fights to stop a plague caused by a witch queen. It has been described as a passion project for Diesel, who previously compared it to his own “Dungeons & Dragons” campaigns.
“‘The Last Witch Hunter’ has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world,” Lionsgate Motion Picture group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement to Variety. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”
The project is being fast-tracked by Lionsgate and Diesel’s One Race Films, according to reports. A release date has yet to be revealed.
This will be Caine’s first film since he announced he was retiring from acting in 2023. Caine made his last on-screen appearance in “The Great Escaper” that year, playing a World War II veteran who breaks out of a nursing home for an event commemorating the anniversary of D-Day.
Caine is a two-time Oscar winner with 175 acting credits including “The Dark Knight,” “The Prestige,” “Jaws: The Revenge,” “A Bridge Too Far,” “Now You See Me,” “Alfie,” “Inception,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” “Miss Congeniality,” “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” “Get Carter,” and “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”
He was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for “The Cider House Rules” (1999) and Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986).
