According to Deadline, the 42-year-old actor prepared for the Chad Stahelski-directed project when he sustained the injury during pre-production. The incident pushed back the start of filming, with production now set to begin in early 2026 instead of fall 2025.
Highlander remakes the 1986 fantasy-adventure film that starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. The new version casts Cavill as Connor MacLeod, joining Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Max Zhang.
Producers include Scott Stuber, Nick Nesbitt, Neal H. Moritz, Josh Davis, Louise Rosner, and Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment. Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists secured the rights from Lionsgate, with plans to develop a potential series. The original Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy, led to multiple sequels and a popular TV show following its 1986 release. The release window for the remake remains unconfirmed, though Stahelski has previously suggested a potential date in 2027 or 2028.
Cavill teased the project at CinemaCon in 2024, telling audiences, “If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet” (via Deadline). The actor drew comparisons to his earlier fantasy-action work, particularly The Witcher, noting that the filmmakers were “going deep into these characters.”
