On March 19, 2014, the Orpheum Theatre Group (then Memphis Development Foundation) broke ground on what would become the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education (named after former Orpheum president Pat Halloran). This space – meant to house the Orpheum’s growing education programs – opened to the public for a free community day on Saturday, September 15, 2015. And now, 10 years later, a three-day celebration will commemorate the magic of a decade.
The festivities begin with a special one night-only concert on Saturday, September 13 starring alumni of the Orpheum’s education and community engagement programs. Bluff City to Broadway and Beyond will feature a retrospective of the success and impact of the decade with an evening of incredible performances. Performers include Ethan Hardy Benson (Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour, Rolling Thunder off-Broadway), Raneem Imam (Memphis-based singer songwriter, Peace of Mind, Raneem & Better in Color), Melissa VanPelt (Hairspray Broadway + National Tour, Superfreak: The Rick James Story), and Riley Thad Young (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway). Tickets for this event are on sale now at orpheum-memphis.com. VIP ticket includes premium seating and access to a post-performance reception that features a champagne toast, celebratory birthday cake, and a meet and greet photo opportunity with the stars of the show!
On Sunday September 14, the Halloran Centre will be abuzz with activity from 1-5pm with a FREE community day open to all ages. There will be food trucks on the Halloran Centre Plaza and performances in the theatre by Opera Memphis, Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group, Ann C. Perry, Princeton James Productions, Memphis Jookin, and Cequita Monique. Workshops will be led throughout the day by Orpheum Teaching Artists in poetry singing, acting, songwriting, and West African Drumming. Check out the schedule here to make sure you don’t miss a moment!
And finally on the actual anniversary of the Halloran Centre, Monday September 15, you can give a $10 gift to celebrate this milestone and to ensure the next decade. You can also support through dedicating a brick on the plaza or naming a seat in the theatre.
Since opening 10 years ago, the Halloran Centre continues to thrive as a hub for arts education and community. The programs and performances that come out of the Halloran Centre empower creative minds and foster confidence and connection. As the Halloran Centre looks to the next decade, the Orpheum Theatre Group remains deeply committed to inspiring, educating and serving Memphis and the Mid-South through the transformative power of the arts.
