On the night of 1st June 2001, the world witnessed one of the darkest chapters in Nepal’s history the Royal Nepal Massacre at the Narayanhiti Royal Palace in Kathmandu. Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah allegedly opened fire during a royal family gathering, killing King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, Queen Aishwarya, Prince Nirajan, Princess Shruti, and several other members of the Shah dynasty.
This shocking incident left Nepal without its beloved monarch and plunged the nation into grief, confusion, and conspiracy theories. Official investigations claimed that Crown Prince Dipendra carried out the massacre before turning the gun on himself, slipping into a coma, and dying three days later.
But even after decades, many unanswered questions remain. Why did this tragedy unfold? Was it truly about Dipendra’s desire to marry Devyani Rana, which his family opposed? Or was there a deeper political conspiracy behind the bloodshed at Narayanhiti Palace?
