Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s name resonates far beyond Malaysia’s borders.

His contributions to the arts, spanning music, film, and theatre, have immortalised him as a symbol of excellence, passion, and dedication. His legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.

For the older generation, P. Ramlee’s films remain a cherished treasure. They grew up watching his performances, captivated by his talents as an actor, singer, and songwriter. For many, his movies offer a glimpse into Malaysia’s golden age of cinema, a time when stories of love, sacrifice, and humour flourished on screen.

“The younger generation, however, may not fully appreciate the depth of his work due to limited exposure to his iconic films on free-to-air television stations,” lamented Tan Sri Dr Yussof Latiff, president of the Penang Malay Association (Pemenang).

“Yet, as many have found, once they are introduced to his masterpieces, they too become captivated by the timeless allure of his artistry.”

Yussof said P. Ramlee’s films reflected Malaysian society, with all its intricacies, struggles, and triumphs.

That is why he is excited about the upcoming ‘P. Ramlee – National & International Icon’ seminar and festival at the Auditorium Murad Mohd Noor, Universiti Sains Malaysia, from Sept 19-21. The event is organised by the P. Ramlee Fan Club of Penang.

The event, held in conjunction with P. Ramlee’s 96th birthday and Hari Seniman Negara, will:

  • Celebrate P. Ramlee’s monumental contributions to the arts, music, film, and culture.

  • Continue his vision for social development through arts and community welfare.

  • Support and encourage new talents in culture, music, arts, and sports, inspiring them to emulate his dedication and versatility.

  • Promote a strong sense of loyalty to the nation and its ideals, reflecting the values of the Rukun Negara.

  • To engage younger audiences, there will be a portrait drawing contest for children, and schools will compete in ‘short funny plays’ and sketches.

“We want to expose the younger generation to the magic of P. Ramlee through these competitions,” said Yussof, also the organising chairman.

“Besides that, we also have a children’s retro glam costume competition, with prize money and trophies for the winners.”

There is also a Ratu Kebaya competition, a recital of P. Ramlee’s poetry, and an international singing competition.

“What is unique about the singing competition is that each participant will perform two songs. One must be a P. Ramlee number, and the other can be of their choice, in any language,” said Yussof, adding that contestants may opt to sing two P. Ramlee songs.

Yussof said P. Ramlee’s influence extended far beyond the silver screen, leaving an enduring impact on music, culture, and the economy.

“Through his jokes, songs, and dialogues, he wove stories that transcended cultures and languages, making them universally relatable. His work remains a beacon for those who believe in the power of storytelling, music, and cinema to shape and influence society.”

The seminar will bring together experts, fans, critics, and members of the arts scene from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore, united in admiration for the man who left an indelible mark on the arts.

The event will also address the misuse of P. Ramlee’s name and legacy, ensuring his contributions remain protected and celebrated in their purest form.

It will feature a wide array of presentations, including 20 research papers on various aspects of P. Ramlee’s life and career. Experts, historians, and filmmakers will explore his films, music, and influence on Malaysian culture. They include Yussof, Professor Emeritus Mohamed Ghouse Nasuruddin from Universiti Sains Malaysia’s School of Arts, Associate Professor Dr Azeem Fazwan Ahmad Farouk, Director of Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Centre for Policy Research, actor and producer Adlin Aman Ramlie, and Karyawan president Datuk Sohaimi Abdul Aziz.

Through initiatives like the P. Ramlee Festival, there is a renewed commitment to fostering a vibrant arts community, reaching new audiences, and encouraging a deeper appreciation for the cultural richness P. Ramlee left behind.
