Steve Irwin sadly died almost 20 years ago but his son Robert Irwin, who will be competing on this year’s Dancing With The Stars, has revealed his dad’s still a huge part of his life.
Steve died at the age of 44 in 2006 when Robert was just two years old. The zookeeper passed away after being pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb.
Reflecting on his dad’s life, Robert admitted that he feels closer to him now more than ever. Robert opened up after he recently collapsed while rehearsing for DWTS.
“He’s still part of every day,” Robert revealed to People Magazine. “He’s part of every conversation. He’s part of my life.”
The 21-year-old said he feels as though he gets a little part of his dad back with every conversation he has about him, or every new story he hears about Steve.
The zookeeper added, “I’m so grateful for that, because while I didn’t have much time with my dad, I have a human being who exemplifies everything I want to be in life.”
Robert also shared a heartbreaking life lesson he learned following his dad’s death, explaining how it helped him to realize that “life is fragile.”
He concluded, “We don’t know what tomorrow holds, so you have to take calculated risks, you have to have fun, enjoy what you’re doing, and give everything 100 per cent.”
