Seth Rogen Won His First Emmy Award Ever for 'The Studio'

At the 77th annual Emmy Awards, Seth Rogen won his first-ever Emmy Award for his work on The Studio, the hit comedy about a flummoxed Hollywood studio head—Matt Remick, played by Rogen—that he created alongside longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg.

Rogen won for Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series, a category that saw him in the running against Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Jason Segel (Shrinking), and Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This).

Upon taking the stage at the Peacock Theater, a flustered and (literally) speechless Seth Rogen admitted he was unprepared to win and thus did not write a full thank-you speech beforehand. Still, he profusely thanked family, friends, coworkers, and guest stars of The Studio, but not before telling a childhood story about never winning anything and buying his own trophy.

“When I was a kid, I bought a used bowling trophy at an estate sale. And my parents were like, ‘Yeah, that’s a good idea,'” Rogen recalled, which drew laughter from the audience. “Thank you to my wife, my mother, everyone who works on the show, my agents, my managers, the writers, everyone who guest starred in the show. Thank you so much.”

He ended his lightning-quick speech saying: “This is really just so lovely. I don’t know what to say! This is so nice! Thank you. I appreciate you all.”

Rogen was also up for awards in other categories, including Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (for the episode “The Oner”) and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (for the episode “The Promotion”). The Studio was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.

This year’s awards were not the first time that Rogen was in the mix for Emmy trophies. In 2022, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, for his work on the series Pam & Tommy released on Hulu; he lost to Murray Bartlett for The White Lotus.

In our February cover story with Seth Rogen from earlier this year, the filmmaker and actor said The Studio posed a much different challenge than his other comedy-oriented projects. Prompted by GoodFellas, Rogen and Goldberg wondered if comedy could be done in “oners”: long, uninterrupted tracking shots normally weaponized by modern action films. “It’s something I’ve seen other genres do,” Rogen told Esquire. “We thought, What if we displayed comedy like this? What would it be like to rely on your performers and your cinematography to capture comedy live in camera, essentially?”

The technique, while impressive, went against Rogen and Goldberg’s M.O. as improv performers and comedy writers. “When we started, with Freaks and Geeks and Superbad, we would improvise a ton, and then in editing is where we’d find the scene,” said Rogen. “Me and Evan became enamored with the idea of: What if we do something the complete opposite way that we’ve been taught to do it? Instead of shooting everything and trying to sift through it later, what if we really work on the scripts and be hard on the scenes and try to lock ourselves into something in the moment, as we’re doing it?”

Rogen’s experimentation has clearly paid off, because he’s now an Emmy-winner. Might an Oscar be in his future? Now that would get Matt Remick really excited.
