Not to diminish the year’s stellar field of nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but it was obvious that Noah Wyle was walking away with the Emmy Award tonight. His performance as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in HBO’s medical drama, The Pitt, wasn’t just the role of a lifetime; it also helped thousands of struggling healthcare professionals feel seen for their tireless and selfless work.
“What a dream this has been,” Wyle said in his acceptance speech. “To anybody who is going on shift, or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job. This is for you.”
For his contribution to the medical community, he wore a black tuxedo to the awards show designed by the scrubs company, FIGS. “We made a tuxedo and it’s probably the only one we’ll ever make,” FIGS wrote on Instagram. “But when Noah Wyle wants to use the Emmys to advocate for healthcare professionals everywhere, you make magic happen.”
Before The Pitt, Wyle stared in twelve seasons of ER as Dr. John Carter. HBO’s latest medical drama reunited Wyle with ER executive producer R. Scott Gemill—who created and co-produced The Pitt with the former ER star. As Dr. Robby, Wyle leads the Pittsburgh-based emergency center and its crew of residents. Each episode takes place over the course of one hour in one fifteen-hour shift, which encompasses multiple traumatic events, the aftermath of a school shooting, and Dr. Robby’s personal road to recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Pitt was also nominated in thirteen other categories tonight, winning Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Katherine LaNasa), Outstanding Casting, and Outstanding Guest Actor (Shawn Hatosy).

Earlier this summer, Wyle joined a group of medical professionals to call on Congress to enact real healthcare reform. As he told Esquire in April, “You recognize that it’s people who are being strained to their breaking points day in and day out, unfairly in a job where we really need them to be healthy—because their health ultimately reflects on our health.”
The Pitt will return for season 2 this January. The new season will explore the aftermath of a July 4th fireworks incident, as well as the ramifications from the Donald Trump administration’s recent string of budget cuts to hospitals nationwide.
“We just have to make sure that wherever we take [audiences], it’s grounded, believable, and in keeping with their characters,” Wyle told Esquire’s Brady Langmann before jetting off to a writer’s room for season 2 this spring. “We don’t need to be too sensational. We don’t need to go out there and try to find a shark to jump. We just need to figure out how to stay true to our format.”
