Youngest Emmy Winner Owen Cooper is still letting his historic moment sink in.

The 15-year-old actor made television history on Sunday night when he became the youngest male Emmy winner ever. Cooper, who was born and raised in England, won his first Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series category for his role as Jamie Miller in Netflix’s Adolescence.

The Netflix limited series explores the aftermath of a brutal stabbing at a school, focusing on the family of 13-year-old Jamie, who is accused of the murder. Directed by Philip Barantin, the four-episode drama is presented in a unique single-take style, with each episode unfolding in real-time. The series delves into the complex issues of mental health, social media’s influence, toxic masculinity and online bullying, plus examines the “why” behind the crime rather than just focusing on the perpetrator.

“Standing up here is just so surreal,” the actor started his acceptance speech. “I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”

After his win, Cooper spoke with Entertainment Tonight about his Emmy win and what he plans to do next. The interviewer first asked the young actor what his thoughts and reactions were right before presenter Sydney Sweeney opened the envelope and announced his name.

“[I had] so many thoughts,” admitted the Adolescence star. “I was just looking down and then everyone got up. All the Adolescence cast and crew, the award goes to them, really.”

Cooper also admitted that he wishes that he could watch the show “as a fan” and that he has only seen the second and fourth episodes of the series. “I can’t say it’s good because I’m in it,” he adds.

The interviewer then shifts the topic and asks the English actor if he has a new project lined up, to which Cooper responded that he doesn’t and that he is just focused on school right now. But he is set to appear in BBC’s upcoming TV series Film Club later this year and Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation as young Heathcliff, which he filmed back in March and stars Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie. The movie is set to be released on Valentine’s Day 2026.

After seeing Tom Holland’s performance in the 2012 film The Impossible, it inspired Cooper to start acting and start taking classes at The Drama Mob in Manchester. Stephen Graham, the executive producer, co-creator and actor who plays Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller, in the series, wanted to cast an unknown actor from northern England for the role and reached out to Cooper’s drama school. Cooper was chosen from a pool of over 500 auditions.

The 15-year-old actor’s role as Jamie earned him widespread critical acclaim, especially since it was his debut role and first acting credit.

Adolescence swept its category, winning every award it was nominated for in the Limited Series race. Cooper’s co-stars, Graham and Erin Doherty, both took home Outstanding Actor honors for their performances. The show also earned wins for Best Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing.

The Emmy Awards took place on Sunday evening in Los Angeles at the Peacock Theater, and was broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.

Fans can watch Adolescence on Netflix.
