A road-rage confrontation in New Jersey turned violent Thursday when a woman was shot in the face near Stockton University, leading to the arrest of an actor known for his roles in the “Resident Evil” video games on attempted homicide charges.
The Galloway Township Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call shortly after the shooting on Sept. 11. The victim, identified as Maritza Arias-Galva, told dispatchers she had been shot in the face by a man in another vehicle, who then fled north onto Vera King Ferris Drive on the universitys campus.
Arriving officers found Arias-Galva with a gunshot wound to her face and immediately provided aid. She was able to describe her attacker as a white male with blonde hair in a ponytail, driving a white Honda SUV. Arias-Galva was transported by Galloway Township Ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation moved quickly from her description of the vehicle, and detectives identified 46-year-old Ernest Wesley Heinz of Port Republic as the suspect. He was located later that day at a residence in the Blue Heron Pines development in Galloway Township and taken into custody. Police said the attack appeared to be an “isolated road-rage incident.”
Police executed search warrants on three homes in Port Republic, one residence in Galloway Township, and two vehicles linked to Heinz. He was charged with criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
“The prompt and professional actions of our officers resulted in a quick apprehension of Mr. Heinz,” said Police Chief Eric B. Hendrickson. “We wish Ms. Aria-Galva a swift recovery, and we are here to support our community following this senseless incident.”
The Galloway Township Police Department extended thanks to the Stockton University Police Department, the Atlantic County Sheriffs Office, the Atlantic County Prosecutors Office, the New Jersey State Police, and other Atlantic County agencies that assisted in the investigation.
