The former butler of King Charles has revealed he was “surprised” by his choice of regnal name after ascending to the throne.
When a monarch assumes power, they have the freedom to select any of their given names as their official Royal title.
Grant Harrold, who served the then Prince of Wales from 2004 to 2011, shared insights into why the King opted for Charles III as his regnal name, rather than King George VII – which Harrold had anticipated.
The King’s complete name is Charles Philip Arthur George, giving him multiple options when he became monarch.
Harrold disclosed King Charles’s reasoning during the launch of his book, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service.
He revealed, “I had a conversation [with him] and he explained to me about [the] titles, he explained to me about why you bow and curtsey, and he explained to me about the different titles he could use.
“And we, myself and other colleagues, discussed it and we were all convinced he would [become] George VII.”
Harrold believes Charles’s decision to bypass George VII may have been influenced by his grandson, Prince George, who stands second in line to the throne after Prince William.
He said, “With his grandson George, maybe he felt he should be the next George VII. Maybe he feels that it would be a nice thing to let him have that – be the next George – because it makes sense for Charles to go with Charles, it does make sense, but to go with George, it would make more sense for his grandson to have that name.”
King Charles ascended to the throne on September 8, 2022, after his mother Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

His rise to power was immediate following her death, as the Crown automatically passes to the heir in the UK.
Harrold also revealed another reason he was shocked at the choice to become King Charles III.
He said, “Because Charles II had a reputation as [being] a womaniser and Charles I lost his head (after he was tried and convicted of treason). So when he picked Charles, I was quite surprised because that was not the impression I got.”
King Charles took the throne after Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022.
He commemorated the anniversary quietly this week at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the beloved monarch died at age 96.
This mirrors his late mother’s custom of spending her accession day at Sandringham House in Norfolk, where her father King George VI died at just 56 years old on February 6, 1952.
