A Georgia man allegedly used his niece’s rented car to help him break into another vehicle and steal luggage inside, which included hard drives containing tracks of unreleased Beyoncé music, police said Tuesday.
Kelvin Evans was booked on suspicion of felony motor vehicle theft in connection to the vehicle break-in in Atlanta, where Beyoncé was prepping for “Cowboy Carter” shows.
“We can confirm an arrest was made in the larceny from auto case” from July 8, according to a statement by Atlanta police officer Anthony Grant. “Suspect Kelvin Evans was taken into custody by Hapeville PD and was booked into the Fulton County Jail.”
Grant added: “The stolen items have not yet been recovered at this time.”
Beyoncé choreographer Christopher Grant and dancer Diandre Blue lost belongings in the break-in, including a laptop which included music from their boss which has yet to be released, officials said.
Parking garage surveillance cameras captured the break-in with the suspect leaving the scene in a black Hyundai Elantra, according to an affidavit supporting Evans’ arrest.
That Elantra was a rental and had been signed out to Santana Evans on the night of this break-in, the affidavit said. The renter said that she briefly loaned that car to her uncle, who she calls “Keven Evans” and was later identified as Kelvin Evans, on July 8, police aid.
The older Evans had only asked to borrow the car for 5 minutes but that turned into 30 minutes, as four previously unseen black suitcases ” appeared in the back” of that Elantra, Santana Evans told police, adding that she “did not question where they came from.”
When the uncle and niece met up later for him to retrieve that luggage, more surveillance footage showed Kelvin Evans wearing clothes that are “consistent” with the man breaking into Grant and Blue’s car, police said.
The suspect Evans lives at 370 North Ave. in Hapeville, and a pair of Air Pods, taken in the theft, were pinging at that address, police said.
Evans was booked into custody on Aug. 25 and was still in jail on Wednesday, held in lieu of $20,000 bail. He’s accused of both the theft and violating terms of his probation.
Jail records did not show if Evans had hired or been assigned a criminal defense lawyer to speak on his behalf.
Bey played four “Cowboy Carter” shows between July 10 and 14 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of football’s Atlanta Falcons.
