Punk band Refused announces final tour dates, reveals why they’re calling it quits

Refused is breaking up for good, and wanted to make that point clear.

In September 2024, the Swedish punk band announced they were calling it a day after an extensive run of worldwide tour dates. On Tuesday, Refused announced the dates for their final eight shows, which will take place in Sweden, including their hometown concert in Umeå on December 21.

Drummer David Sandström elaborated on the band’s decision to break up in an Instagram post. First, he put aside any pre-conceived notions that Refused would return in the future, like bands such as KISS or Motley Crue.

“A few people have insinuated that, like some other bands who, in the fashion of the great Larry David, quit with bells, whistles (and blood raining from a lacerating sky) only to return within a few years as if nothing had happened, Refused would do the same, Sandström wrote. “Well, we won’t, and I feel the need to elucidate.”

The drummer also alluded to the “ambiguity” in the band’s statement when they reunited in 2012, adding it was for “plausible deniability, because we weren’t sure our attempt at a permanent reunion would fly. It did, but only so far.” Refused broke up in 1998 and later reformed in 2012 with a comeback performance at Coachella.

Sandström also went on to add that the continuation of the band was not necessarily the best thing for him and lead singer Dennis Lyxzén’s friendship.

“Refused was never good for mine and Dennis’ relationship,” the drummer wrote. “We both have our own idea of what the band should be and how we should behave, and never the twain shall meet. And we’d rather be friends than play in a popular band.”

But as Refused ends, something new will arise. The drummer went on to say the four members of the soon-to-be-retired band will be starting a new entity together.

“A new band has been born within the band, and we (Mattias, Magnus, Dennis, and me) want to explore that, a band with no baggage, no fans to please, limited only by our wildest musical hopes and dreams,” wrote Sandström. “We’re very excited about getting around to taming this new wild beast.”
