Raye Is Back. It’s Only Taken Two Years and a Stolen Car

Last year, Raye announced some bad news: The second album she’d been working on was now in flux after her car — which included notebooks with all her new songs — was stolen. “So no second album any time soon love you bye,” she wrote on Instagram. But the album is clearly back on track, since today, the undeniable British singer and songwriter is previewing it with a new single, “Where Is My Husband!”

A surging blend of R&B old (blasting horns) and new (her zippy phrasing and bustling rhythms rooted in hip hop), “Where Is My Husband!” made its splashy debut during a dazzling performance of the song at this summer’s Glastonbury festival. This studio version (produced and co-written with her longtime collaborator Mike Sabath) doesn’t disappoint. Starting with its intro drum roll, “Where Is My Husband!” may be the brassiest, most assertive piece of music Raye has ever released, and we don’t just mean the exclamation point: Both the arrangement and her singing downright crackle, as do the words: “Wait til I get my hands on him/I’ma tell him off too/For how long he kept me waiting,” she sings about the imaginary partner of her future. Check out the song and its video below.

The delay in the completion of Raye’s second album is unfortunately of a piece with setbacks that once dogged her. After garnering buzz in England for a sound and look that recalled vintage and jazz and soul singers but was undeniably non-retro, the former Rachel Keen began a swift climb up the modern-pop ladder, co-writing tracks for Charli XCX (“After the Afterparty”) and Beyoncé (“Bigger,” from the Lion King remake) as well as John Legend and Ellie Goulding.

But when it came to her own music, Raye felt her first record company was trying to shoehorn her into a style of music — clubby dance music — that didn’t work for her, and the label ultimately shelved her planned debut album. Newly independent, she started fresh and completed her full-on debut, the acclaimed 21st Century Blues, which arrived in early 2023 and introduced her newly luxurious but spiky melding of contemporary R&B, pop, and jazz.

Coinciding with the release of her still-untitled second album, Raye will also embark on a 40-date headlining tour that will start in the U.K. and Europe before moving on to the States, where she’ll play Radio City Music Hall in New York and the Greek Theatre in L.A., among others. Providing direct support throughout the entire tour are Raye’s younger sisters, the artists Absolutely and Amma.
