Alongside a family that has lost a husband and a father the Nashville songwriting community is in mourning today after Brett James Cornelius, known professionally as Brett James, passed away tragically on September 18, 2025, at the age of 57. He was killed in a small-aircraft crash near Franklin, North Carolina. All three people aboard the plane were lost.

Life and Career

Born on June 5, 1968, in Columbia, Missouri, Brett James originally pursued medicine in college before turning to his true passion—music.

He made his first forays into performing in the mid-1990s, releasing a debut album in 1995 under Career Records. While his early work as a solo artist yielded modest chart success, he soon discovered his greatest gift lay in songwriting for others.

Over nearly three decades, he established himself as one of country music’s most respected and prolific songwriters. His songs have been recorded hundreds of times by leading artists. He wrote a string of No. 1 hits, including ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’ by Carrie Underwood, ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ by Kenny Chesney, ‘Who I Am by Jessica Andrews,’ ‘I Hold On’ by Dierks Bentley ‘Bottoms Up’ by Brantley Gilbert, ‘Something in the Water’ by Carrie Underwood and many more.

His songwriting won major awards. ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’ brought him Grammy recognition, including Best Country Song. He was a two-time Country Songwriter of the Year. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020.

Legacy & Impact

Brett James was widely regarded by fellow artists and industry figures as a masterful craftsman of song: someone who could find the emotional truth in ordinary moments, and whose words and melody resonated deeply with audiences. His gift was not just in writing hits, but in elevating stories—of love, faith, struggle, and hope—with authenticity.

For many artists early in their careers, collaborating with Brett James was formative. His willingness to mentor, to refine ideas, and to bring out the best in others made him beloved among peers. In public statements following his death, many have spoken of his generosity, his sense of humour, and his integrity.

Survived By

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Cornelius, and their children.

Brett James leaves behind a rich catalogue of music and a legacy that will endure through the many songs he gave to the world. His loss is deeply felt in the country music community and beyond, but his work will continue to inspire and comfort for years to come.
