According to a press release by Sinclair, the broadcasting company that makes up the nation’s largest ABC affiliate group, there’s a chance for Jimmy Kimmel! to be taken off its “indefinite” suspension,” only if the host agrees to a few terms.
Following the comments made about Charlie Kirk’s death in Kimmel’s monologue on Monday, Sept. 15, the late-night show was taken off the air by Disney’s ABC and coinciding with Nexstar Media’s decision to preempt airings of the program.
Sinclair revealed in their press release, per PEOPLE, that they are willing to lift the suspension and return the late-night talk show to its ABC stations if Kimmel agrees to “issue a direct apology to the Kirk family.”
That’s not all, part of Sinclair’s deal also includes Kimmel making a “meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA.” Turning Point USA is Kirk’s nonprofit organization that promotes conservative politics in educational settings like high school, college, and universities.
There must also be “formal discussions” with ABC about the network’s “professionalism and “accountability.”
Sinclair also stated that despite ABC’s future plans for Jimmy Kimmel!, it will not move forward with reinstating the series on the air until they are “confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.”
Kimmel has yet to make a public announcement over the late show being pulled and his thoughts on the aftermath of his monologue.
“Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,” said Sinclair vice chairman Jason Smith. “We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.”
Instead of Kimmel’s usual time slot this weekend, Sinclair’s 30 ABC station will instead air a special remembrance for Kirk on Friday. Some of the stations that will air the special include KOMO in Seattle, Washington; WJLA in Washington, D.C.; KDNL in St. Louis, Missouri; KTUL in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and KATU in Portland, Oregon.
