On Friday, Sept. 19, Morrissey announced he would be cancelling his shows this weekend after receiving a death threat.

The British musician shared the news on Instagram, noting that his show that night at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, and Saturday, Sept. 20 show at MGM Music Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, were off.

“Due to recent events and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and band, the upcoming shows this weekend at Foxwoods and MGM Music Hall have been cancelled. All tickets will be refunded automatically at your original point of purchase,” he wrote.

A statement from MGM Music Hall on Instagram further explained, “In recent days, there has been a credible threat to Morrissey’s life.”

According to CBS News, Morrissey received a death threat prior to a show in Ottawa, Canada on Sept. 12. The threat was made by a 26-year-old Ottawa man. The man has since been charged, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Despite the threat, Morrissey still performed at the capital city on Sept. 12 and then again in Toronto on Sept. 13. Additionally, he took the stage in New York on Sept. 16.

Following these performances, the now-cancelled shows in Connecticut and Massachusetts were next on his tour schedule. As of writing, he is still set to perform in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at The Met Philadelphia. Tickets are currently available on Ticketmaster.

Morrissey has a history of cancelling shows, though never due to something as serious as a death threat. Last year, he cancelled a show mid-concert after a fan hopped on stage and hugged him, per Billboard. He also reportedly cancelled a Coachella performance in 2009 due to the smell of burning meat from nearby food vendor, and a San Jose concert in 2014 after fans stormed the stage. That same year, he also pulled the plug on a Poland show due to a heckler.

Steven Patrick Morrissey, better known only by his last name, was the frontman for The Smiths in the 1980s. The band gained prominence with alternative rock hits like “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” “The Boy with the Thorn in His Side,” and “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want.” He launched his solo career in 1988, making hits of “Suedehead,” “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get” and “Certain People I Know” (from the Grammy-nominated “Your Arsenal”).
