Cro-Mags is over bands thanking them for inspiration and is asking them to return the favor.
Vocalist/bassist Harley Flanagan of the New York hardcore band took to his personal Instagram page to speak about the lack of big opportunities Cro-Mags have gotten. While the band has enjoyed a spirited following throughout the years and is currently on tour, the musician called out the bands that have been apprehensive of giving them a massive opening slot.
“To all the famous bands that have been giving me love all these years and thanking me for the inspiration, etc., how about giving me a gig opening up for your bands instead of giving me love when nobody’s looking,” wrote Flanagan. “Thank you.”
Flanagan, who has been the only consistent member of the Cro-Mags since their inception in 1981, would go on to name specific bands, including Metallica, Green Day, and Turnstile. In a 2020 interview with With Guitars, the bassist stated the legendary metal bands like Slayer “wouldn’t sound the way they do if it wasn’t for hardcore [music].” The bassist, needless to say, is done with verbal overtures and wants to see some bookings happen.
“Everyone from Metallica to Pantera to Avenged Sevenfold to Green Day, Turnstile, and so on and so on have given me props, given me respect and love and called me a legend,” Flangan laments. “It would be nice if somebody gave us a gig. instead lol. I’ve been working hard since the 80s. How about a hand up motherf–kers, instead of love when no one’s looking. I’m good enough to inspire you, just not good enough to open up for you??”
