When you’ve been rocking for as long as Joe Perry, you make plenty of friends—many of whom came out in force when the Aerosmith guitarist’s side band, The Joe Perry Project, opened up for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sept. 17.
Perry formed the eponymous band after he exited Aerosmith in 1979. JPP released a trio of albums in the early ’80s—Let the Music Do the Talking, I’ve Got the Rock & Rolls Again, and Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker—before Perry ultimately returned to Aerosmith in ’84. JPP stayed dormant, for the most part, with a few performances over the decades. But when Aerosmith announced its retirement in May 2025, Perry decided to bring it back.
This new incarnation of JPP is a classic rock supergroup: the lineup includes Perry’s Aerosmith bandmate Brad Whitford on guitar, former Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo, ex-Smash Mouth drummer Jason Sutter, and Black Crowes’ vocalist Chris Robinson. But these weren’t the only A-listers sharing the stage with Joe Perry on Wednesday.
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Steven Tyler came out to help Perry and the band perform Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way.” Afterwards, with Tyler playing a train whistle, the band did a version of Aerosmith’s cover of Tiny Bradshaw’s “Train Kept A-Rollin’.”
Earlier in the set, Guns ‘N Roses guitar legend Slash joined JPP to cover Aerosmith’s “Mama Kin.” Slash traded licks with Perry and Whitford, according to UCR, giving the thousands attending the show an experience of a lifetime.
JPP played a short set, most of which were Aerosmith covers. The supergroup also performed hits from members’ other bands: the Black Crowes’ “Twice as Hard” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Vasoline.”
Aerosmith officially retired in August 2024, a year after they started the short-lived “Peace Out” farewell tour. Tyler suffered a serious vocal injury three shows into the tour, prompting the band to first postpone the tour before ultimately pulling the plug.
Since then, Tyler has delivered some high-profile performances, including one alongside YUNGBLUD at the 2025 MTV VMAs tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. Soon afterwards, Aerosmith announced they were teaming with YUNGBLUD for a new song.
“I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left,” said Perry in an August interview. “There’s been talk about doing a documentary, that might be part of it. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven, and he just doesn’t want to tour – and he can’t tour. It’s tough.”
