Fans have been waiting patiently for Miley Cyrus to expand on her Something Beautiful era, and that time has officially come. On Friday, September 19, the 32-year-old Grammy winner released the deluxe edition of her ninth studio album, adding two new tracks — including “Secrets,” a song she publicly dedicated to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved,” Miley wrote on X (formerly Twitter) the morning of the release. “In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same. Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music. This song is for my dad.”
The 64-year-old “Achy Breaky Heart” singer wasted no time responding with a string of heart emojis: “♥️♥️♥️.” But that wasn’t all — Billy Ray followed up on X with a reel of family footage, including clips of Miley as a baby in 1993.
“Best birthday gift a dad could ever ask for. ❤️ Thank you @mileycyrus for Secrets… a song straight from your heart to mine,” he captioned the post. “The memories we’ve made together mean the world to me, and seeing you soar with your music makes me prouder every single day. Having Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood on this track is pure magic.”
“Secrets” features Fleetwood Mac legends Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, who appear on guitar and drums. It arrives alongside another new track, “Lockdown,” a 13-minute collaboration with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Both songs expand Something Beautiful, which Miley released on May 30, through Columbia Records. The original version was executive-produced by the Hannah Montana icon and Shawn Everett, debuted with a companion visual film at Tribeca in June, and drew inspiration from Pink Floyd’s The Wall.
“My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture,” Miley previously told Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s a concept album that’s an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music.”
The deluxe rollout comes after weeks of teasing. On September 17, Miley previewed “Secrets” online, and Billy Ray hyped it on Instagram with the caption, “Secrets out Friday!!!! Can’t wait for everyone to hear the whole song.” Weeks earlier, on August 25—his 64th birthday—he revealed that Miley had written the track for him and had brought in his favorite musicians to play on it.
The song doubles as a public olive branch following years of family upheaval. Miley’s parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, split in April 2022 after nearly three decades of marriage. Within a year, both remarried — Tish to actor Dominic Purcell in August 2023, and Billy Ray to singer Firerose in October 2023.
Their marriages and subsequent divorce headlines (Billy Ray and Firerose finalized their split in August 2024) kept the family in the spotlight. The country singer is now reportedly dating Elizabeth Hurley — the pair made their relationship official in April after reconnecting following their time together on Christmas in Paradise.
Earlier this year in May, Miley told the New York Timesthat she and her dad were “not estranged,” adding that turning 30 helped her see her parents as people rather than just mom and dad.
Around the same time, Billy Ray was showing support for his youngest daughter, Noah Cyrus, both on social media and onstage. The two performed together in London in July, with Noah later assuring fans that “everybody’s great and loves each other.”
